Dermabrasion Adelaide | Acne Scar Treatment Adelaide
If your skin is showing serious signs of sun damage, you have deep lines or wrinkles, acne scarring or you have an ongoing problem with adult acne, your skin may respond well to surgical dermabrasion.
Surgical dermabrasion is different from medical microdermabrasion. While microdermabrasion removes the top layer of dead skin cells, surgical dermabrasion precisely removes several layers of skin and underlying scarring using a small, medical-grade abrading handpiece. Once the damaged skin has been removed, new healthy skin begins to develop.
This skin resurfacing procedure gives impressive results, greatly improving skin’s appearance and helping to restore self-confidence.
Surgical dermabrasion is one of the best available treatments for certain forms of adult acne and for acne scarring.
Dermabrasion can be used to successfully treat many types of skin conditions including:
- active acne
- acne scars
- signs of ageing, including deep lines and wrinkles
- pigmentation marks like freckles, liver spots and white spots
- certain moles, skin tags and warts
- certain types of skin cancers and sun warts.
Frequently Asked Questions About Surgical Dermabrasion Adelaide
Q: How do I know if surgical dermabrasion is right for me?
You will need to start by making an appointment to see Dr Kerry, the clinic’s Medical Director and Cosmetic Surgeon.
Dr Kerry will talk to your about your skin concerns and the results you hope to achieve with cosmetic surgery. He will examine your skin and discuss your general medical history.
If you both agree that surgical dermabrasion is a good option to treat your skin concerns, Dr Kerry will talk to you in more detail about the procedure and what to expect, and will take photos of the areas you are having treated.
Q: How is surgical dermabrasion performed?
Surgical dermabrasion is performed in Medical Cosmetic Centre’s operating theatre. We will give you twilight sedation and a local anaesthetic, which means you will be very relaxed and won’t have any memory of the procedure, without the risks associated with a general anaesthetic.
Once you are sedated, Dr Kerry uses a high speed rotary instrument to plane away damaged layers of skin. He uses different sized diamond-studded tips to match the size of your scars or the area being treated.
The amount of skin removed depends on the depth of your skin problem and the results you would like to see.
Surgical dermabrasion will take between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the amount of work you are having done.
After Dr Kerry has finished removing your damaged layers of skin, a clinic nurse will apply a special ointment to keep your skin moist for about a week, until your new skin begins to develop.
Q: What can I expect after surgical dermabrasion?
You will be given a post-operative kit containing ointments, gauze and pain relief medicine. Your kit will also contain clear instructions about caring for your skin.
For the first two days after your operation, your skin will feel warm, as if it is sunburnt. You will begin to see some swelling about 24–48 hours afterwards. The swelling will be at its worst on day three or four. You will have less swelling if you sit up and walk around than if you lie down in bed. On the fifth day, your swelling will start going down and you should begin to feel much better.
Most people who have surgical dermabrasion performed take about 8–14 days off work and stay away from social activities during this time. After six to eight days, women can begin to wear make-up and men can shave.
Q: What type of results can I expect from surgical dermabrasion?
Surgical dermabrasion can produce impressive results for scarred, sun damaged and acne skin.
Acne scars usually improve by between 40 and 60 percent after the first procedure. If you choose to have further surgical dermabrasion procedures, your skin will continue to improve.
As well as removing acne, scars, sun damage, wrinkles and deep lines, dermabrasion will give you a more even skin tone and texture.
