Smart Liposuction – Adelaide
Over the past few years, we have seen lasers replace the scalpel and reduce blood loss in operating theatres. The speed and permanency of laser has replaced the slow, painful removal of hair by electrolysis. Now it is liposuction’s turn in the laser queue.
With the assistance of lasers, laser lipolysis, which is often called smart liposuction or smart lipo, can be performed as a true walk-in, walk-out procedure, without the need for a general anaesthetic or time off work, and with minimal bleeding, bruising, swelling or discomfort.
Many clients choose to have their smart lipo procedure at the end of the week. After taking it easy over the weekend, they are usually ready to return to work or their usual activities on Monday morning.
The use of laser technology makes smart lipo a realistic option for people who were previously concerned about the recovery time and the cost of traditional liposuction procedures. It’s also possible to treat delicate areas that would not be suitable for traditional liposuction.
Frequently Asked Questions About Smart Liposuction
Q: How is smart liposuction performed?
Smart liposuction involves inserting a fine 1mm fibre just under the skin and gently heating the fat cells to just a couple of degrees above normal body temperature. This is enough to dissolve fat cells in the area to an oily substance that is naturally eliminated by the body over the next three to six months. Visually, patients will usually see improvement within three to six weeks.
While liquefying fat cells, the laser also seals off blood vessels, resulting in a procedure with very little blood loss, bruising or discomfort.
Because the procedure is so gentle, no general anaesthetic is needed; you simply take some pain-relief and sedative tablets shortly beforehand.
Q: What face and body areas are suitable for smart liposuction?
Any area of the face or body that can be treated with traditional liposuction can also be treated with smart lipo.
Because smart lipo uses a very fine fibre, it also means that it can be used to treat delicate areas that are less suitable for traditional liposuction. These include the face, ankles, calves and knees.
The laser used in smart lipo also encourages collagen formation, resulting in firmer skin. This makes smart lipo especially effective for the tummy, neck, upper arms and shoulder blades.
If you have large volumes of fat to remove, traditional liposuction is still the preferred procedure. If you do want larger volumes of fat removed using smart lipo, you will usually need to have more than one treatment on the same area. Dr Kerry will discuss which option may be most suitable for you at your initial consultation.
Q: Who are the best candidates for smart liposuction?
Just like traditional liposuction, women and men who are in good physical condition and have localised areas of fat that won’t shift despite healthy eating and plenty of exercise are the best candidates for smart lipo.
Smart lipo is generally best suited to people who have smaller volumes of fat that need to be removed.
Because the recovery time is quicker and the cost is lower, smart lipo makes the option of fat removal available to many more people.
Anyone who is interested in smart lipo needs be personally assessed by Medical Cosmetic Centre’s Medical Director and Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr George Kerry.
Q: How long does the procedure take?
Smart lipo is a much quicker procedure than traditional liposuction.
The time it takes will vary depending on the area or areas you are having treated. As a guide, a chin takes less than one hour to treat.
Q: What is the recovery period after smart liposuction?
As smart lipo is a minimally invasive technique, recovery time and any discomfort are also minimal.
We encourage you to take it easy on the day of your procedure. Most people are then ready to resume their normal activities the following day.
Wearing compression garments for at least three weeks after the procedure will help to speed recovery, improve your results and keep any swelling to an absolute minimum.
You will have a followup appointment with Dr Kerry to have stitches removed about five to seven days after the procedure.
Q: When will I see the results of smart liposuction?
Smart lipo liquefies your fat cells and your body then gradually and naturally eliminates the fat over three to six months.
Visually, you will see an improvement within three to six weeks, with final results taking up to one year.
