Liposuction Adelaide

For generations, women and men have dieted and exercised to help reduce their body fat and improve their body shape. But some stubborn fat deposits need even stronger persuasion!

Liposuction surgery is a procedure that allows both women and men to have persistent and uneven fat deposits removed to improve the shape of their body or face. Liposuction will not make you thin; but will remove excess fat deposits that have been resistant to diet or exercise and will give your body a much more even, balanced appearance.

Today, liposuction (which is sometimes called liposculpture) is one of the most popular types of cosmetic surgery performed in Australia.

During day surgery and under twilight sedation, a small incision is made in the skin and a thin tube is inserted. The tube is attached to an extraction device and extracts fat cells from areas where unsightly fat deposits have accumulated.

Immediately following surgery, a compression garment is applied to prevent fluid accumulation and to support the affected area. The compression garment needs to be worn for a total of six weeks.

It usually takes several months before the final results of liposuction are evident, and you can expect improvement to continue for up to 12 months.

For many people, liposuction gives a new sense of body confidence that can have a dramatic impact on self-esteem.

Frequently Asked Questions About Liposuction

Q: Why can it be so difficult to shift fat in certain areas of the body?

Fat cells lie just beneath the skin and cover the entire body where they store energy that can be used by your body when needed. Fat cells also provide insulation between the skin and the muscle beneath.

When you gain weight, fat cells puff up in volume to increase storage capacity; when you lose weight, the same fat cells shrink. In areas where the body moves more frequently, however, the fat cells seem to hypertrophy (enlarge in size) and never get smaller with weight loss. These areas include the tummy, buttocks, thighs, knees and ankles.

Liposuction removes these enlarged fat cells.

Q: What is tumescent liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction involves introducing a special fluid containing local anaesthetic just under the skin. This anaesthetises the area and mobilises the fat cells ready for extraction. The fluid also contains a vasoconstrictor to reduce bleeding and post-operative bruising.

Q: Which areas of the face and body can be treated with liposuction?

While liposuction surgery is not designed to correct general obesity, any area where excess fat deposits have accumulated can be treated.

Areas of the face and body which respond well to liposuction surgery include the chin, jowls, cheeks, arms, inner and outer thighs, knees, hips and abdomen.

Men with gynaecomastia  (enlarged breasts) can also benefit from liposuction.

Q: Who are the best candidates for liposuction?

Women and men who are in good physical condition and have localised areas of fat that won’t shift despite healthy eating and plenty of exercise are the best candidates for liposuction. It’s also helpful to have good skin elasticity.

When the procedure was first introduced, only younger people were considered to be good candidates, however, recent improvements in the technique have made it possible to treat patients of all ages.

Anyone who is interested in liposuction, regardless of their age, must be personally assessed by Medical Cosmetic Centre’s Medical Director and Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr George Kerry.

Dr Kerry will determine if you are a suitable candidate for liposuction surgery.

Q: What can I expect following liposuction?

Because liposuction surgery only involves small incisions, healing is rapid with minimal scarring.

Most patients are able to walk immediately after surgery and able to return to normal activities within a week — although very strenuous activity and exercise is discouraged for several weeks.

Q: When will I see the results of liposuction?

As with most surgery, you will have some swelling and puffiness after liposuction, and so you won’t immediately see the results.

It usually takes several months before the final results of liposuction are evident, and you can expect improvement to continue for up to 12 months.

Q: What is the recovery period from liposuction?

Recovery from liposuction is usually rapid.

Immediately following surgery, a compression garment is applied to the treated areas to prevent fluid accumulation, to support the affected area and to recontour your body.

You will need to wear the compression garment for 24 hours a day for the first five to seven days. This will depend on the extent of your surgery and your rate of healing.

You will continue to wear the compression garment for 22 hours a day for up to six weeks.

Within two weeks of surgery, you will have ultrasound treatments that encourage lymphatic drainage. These treatments help to reduce bruising and swelling, enhancing the rate of healing.

Q: What are the possible complications?

Liposuction has been performed successfully for over 40 years.

All surgery carries potential risks such as bleeding, infection, poor healing and other risks, even when the surgeon uses the utmost care, judgment and skill.

During your consultation, Dr Kerry will discuss in detail your suitability for this surgery, as well as the risks and benefits.
