Hair Transplantation For Men – Adelaide

Hair loss of some type affects about 40 percent of men by the age of 40, increasing to 65 percent of men by the age of 60.

Losing your hair can have a big impact on you — psychologically and socially.

Hair loss and how it affects your life is something we understand very well at Medical Cosmetic Centre. Our clinic first opened in 1989 specifically to provide men and women with a permanent, surgical hair replacement solution.

All hair transplantation procedures at Medical Cosmetic Centre are performed by the clinic’s Medical Director and Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr George Kerry, who is highly regarded as one of Australia’s leading hair transplant surgeons.

Dr Kerry began his medical career in family practice. When he began to lose his own hair in his early 30s, he found that that many patients wanted to talk to him about their hair loss. Dr Kerry began to research different hair replacement methods available in Australia, and was disappointed with what he found and the procedures he had performed on himself by other surgeons. This dissatisfaction led Dr Kerry to research hair replacement methods being used in the United States.

Through his research, Dr Kerry learnt that there is only one way to naturally and permanently replace hair. This method was originally called micrografting. Dr Kerry undertook intensive study programs in this surgical technique with specialist dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons in the US and then brought this technique to Australia. He further refined this surgical technique using high-powered microscopes to dissect every hair unit.

Dr Kerry’s work in hair replacement has resulted in several appearances on the national current affairs program Today Tonight , Channel 10 and Channel 7 news.

Today, the technique that Dr Kerry pioneered in Australia is called follicular unit grafting or FUG and is the term used at Medical Cosmetic Centre. This same technique may also be called strip grafting.

FUG involves taking microscopic grafts or follicular units of your permanent hair and transplanting them into your balding areas. These hairs take root in their new position where they continue to grow for a lifetime. It is the most natural and safe hair replacement procedure available today.

Medical Cosmetic Centre also offers the option of hair replacement using follicular unit extraction or FUE. This method involves shaving your head and using a tiny mechanical punch to remove many follicular units from the back of your head. These follicular units are then transplanted in the same way as in FUG.

During your first consultation, Dr Kerry will explain the differences between FUG and FUE and will recommend the best method for your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Transplantation For Men

Q: What is male pattern baldness?

Most men who have progressively thinning hair and a spreading bald spot have an inherited type of hair loss called male pattern baldness.

If you have pattern baldness, your genes have already decided which hairs will live for a lifetime and which ones will die prematurely and fall out. You have probably noticed that you are losing hair from the front and top of your head, but not from the back and sides. The hair that isn’t falling out is often called your permanent hair. In follicular unit grafting, it is also called the donor fringe.

Even for men with the most advanced pattern baldness, follicular unit grafting allows you the best chance of recreating a natural hairline.

Q: What is the difference between FUG and FUE?

You may have read about two methods used for hair transplantation: follicular unit grafting or FUG and  follicular unit extraction or FUE.

FUG involves removing a strip of skin-containing hair from the back of your head. This is sometimes called ‘strip harvesting’. The natural hair groupings from this strip are called ‘follicular units’ and each contain between one and three hairs, and very rarely, four hairs. These follicular units are removed from the strip and transplanted into your balding areas.

This method allows the maximum number of follicular units — up to several thousand — to be removed and then transplanted in one procedure. FUG results in one thin scar at the back of your head that is easily covered by your hair.

Because it is the most researched and proven hair transplantation method, FUG is still considered the gold standard in hair replacement and is the method most often used at Medical Cosmetic Centre.

FUE involves shaving your head and using a tiny mechanical punch to remove many follicular units from the back of your head. These follicular units are then transplanted in the same way as in FUG.

Using FUE means you will not have one long scar, but you will have many 1mm scars, the size of the skin punch. So if you had 1000 follicular units extracted, you would have 1000 tiny scars.

FUE may have some advantages for certain patients, such as those who have had a previous scalp trauma or those who want a smaller amount of hair replaced.

The downside is that FUE is much more expensive and less researched. Additionally, your head will need to be shaved for FUE and larger sessions may take two days to complete.

Patients who prefer the option of FUE can have this procedure performed if both they and Dr Kerry decide it is the best option for their needs.

Q: Can I have my eyebrows replaced?

Yes. Dr Kerry successfully uses follicular unit grafting (FUG) as an ideal way to replace eyebrows in men and women.

People can lose their eyebrows for many reasons — often caused by physical trauma such as injuries from a car accident, burns, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, and scarring from other surgery.

Regardless of the cause, FUG can often be used to carefully reconstruct eyebrows. It is very precise work and every hair needs to be positioned in the right place at the right angle to achieve a natural end result.

Replacing eyebrows has a dramatic effect on your overall appearance, and reminds us of the important job eyebrows have in framing our faces and setting off other features.

Q: What will happen at my first hair transplantation consult?

During your first consultation, Dr Kerry will examine your hair and scalp and provide you with an assessment of your current stage of hair loss. He will then talk with you about the type of results you would like to achieve and how you would ideally like to style your hair.

Dr Kerry will help you to work out the ideal amount of hair grafts you will need to achieve your goals and provide you with a formal quotation.

At this stage, Dr Kerry will give you a detailed explanation of how he performs follicular unit grafting (FUG) and follicular unit extraction (FUE) so you can fully understand both procedures and what to expect.

You will have the chance to discuss your time commitments, and how you can best fit these in with a hair transplantation procedure.

Q: What happens at the pre-surgery consult?

In the time between your first consultation and your pre-surgery consultation, you may think of more questions.

Your pre-surgery consult provides the ideal opportunity to go over any of these issues. At this visit, we will do everything we can to help prepare you for your hair transplantation procedure so you are as comfortable as possible.

We will complete all your paperwork and take photos for your file, so that you and Dr Kerry can see the exact progress you will make.

At this appointment, we will also go through a complete health checklist and discuss your post-operative care.

Q: What should I expect on the day of my procedure?

Your hair replacement procedure will be performed while you are under twilight or oral sedation. This means you will be very relaxed and won’t have any memory of the surgery, without the risks associated with a general anaesthetic.

Dr Kerry will begin by numbing your donor area — the area at the back of your scalp which contains the permanent hairs to be transplanted. The follicular units that we remove from your donor area contain the genetic programming for your permanent hair. Even when these are transplanted to the balding parts of your head, their programming guarantees they will not fall out.

If Dr Kerry is using FUG for your procedure, he will remove a strip of skin-containing hair from the numbed area.

Using high-powered microscopes, experienced technicians use this strip of skin to produce anything from 500 to several thousand follicular unit grafts of your own hair. The microscopes allow technicians to see, cut and transplant perfectly intact follicular units — these are your natural hair groupings that each contain between one and three hairs, and very rarely, four hairs.

If Dr Kerry is using FUE for your procedure, he will shave the back of your head and then extract follicular units one by one using a tiny mechanical punch. Each graft is then carefully checked before implantation.

In both FUG and FUE, Dr Kerry then makes tiny incision marks in your balding area. With surgical tweezers, he picks up the follicular units one by one and places them in the incisions. All the surgery is done by Dr Kerry himself.

Dr Kerry pays close attention to the angle and density of hair placement, so he can come very close to recreating your natural hairline. The transplanted hairs stay put instantly and within a few hours, the procedure is finished.

Q: What happens after the procedure?

You will be ready for a friend or family member to take you home a short time after your procedure.

You will be ready to return to work and your usual social activities within two to seven days.

Our staff will explain how to care for your hair in the days and weeks after your surgery.

You will return to have your hair washed on the day following your surgery. After this, our staff will continue to ring you on a regular basis to give you any reassurance and information you need until it is time for your stitches to be removed. During this time, Dr Kerry is also available to talk to you or see you personally if needed.

After surgery, your newly transferred hairs will go through a short resting period and some will fall out. This is completely normal, and is part of your hair’s natural life cycle. Within one to three months, the new hairs will begin to grow and will stay where they have been placed.

Dr Kerry will chart the progress of your hair growth over the next six months. You will be able to see an objective measurement of how much your hair has grown at your regular followup visits.

Q: How should I care for my new hair?

Transplanted hair is your own natural, living hair.

You can wash, comb, cut and style it any way you like. You can ski, swim or jog and visit your hairdresser without any concern.

It is your hair — for life!
