Earlobe Repair – Adelaide
Ear piercings can sometimes widen or even split from wearing heavy earrings or being accidentally pulled. This can be painful and make you feel self-conscious, but can be repaired using a simple surgical procedure.
Stretching or gauging is a type of ear piercing where the hole is enlarged so you can wear jewellery such as tunnels or plugs. If you no longer wish to have a stretched piercing, this hole can be surgically repaired.
In recent years, earlobe repair has become a frequently requested procedure at Medical Cosmetic Centre, and Dr George Kerry is very experienced and skilled in performing this delicate surgery.
The type of surgery you will need depends on the type and severity of your stretching or tears.
Frequently Asked Questions About Earlobe Repair
Q: What type of earlobe repair will I need?
If you are interested in earlobe repair surgery, the first step is to book a consultation with Dr George Kerry.
At your appointment, Dr Kerry will examine your ears, talk with you about the results you wish to achieve, and recommend the type of surgery that will be best suited to your needs.
Q: How is earlobe repair performed?
Before surgery, your earlobes will be numbed with local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort during the procedure.
Surgery involves restoring some of the skin around the rim and hole of the stretched or torn area and then stitching the area closed. If necessary, Dr Kerry will then reshape your ear so it is as close as possible to its original shape.
Depending on how severe your injury is, the procedure takes about 15–45 minutes for each earlobe.
Q: What can I expect after surgery?
For the first week after surgery, your earlobes will be red, swollen and tender. You may need simple pain relief such as paracetamol for the first couple of days. While your ears are healing, you may be more comfortable sleeping on a U-shaped travel pillow so you are not lying directly on your earlobes. Take care to avoid accidentally knocking your ear lobes or touching the area with dirty fingers.
Your post-operative care pack will provide you with more detailed information about what to expect, how to make yourself more comfortable, and how to care for your ears during this time.
You will have a follow-up appointment with Dr Kerry after 7–10 days when he will remove your stitches and check on your progress.
Q: When will I see the final results of earlobe repair?
After your earlobe repair surgery there will be small scars on your ears which will be red at first, but will eventually fade to a pale silvery colour.
In four to six months, your earlobes should look almost completely normal with no obvious signs of your previous piercings.
If you wish to have your ears repierced, you can do this about three to four months after the operation.
