Dermal Fillers – Adelaide
Dermal fillers are smooth gels that are injected below your skin’s surface to fill-in or plump-up your skin, giving you an instantly rejuvenated appearance.
Dermal fillers are used to reduce facial lines, wrinkles, folds and scars. They are also used to add fullness and definition to your lips, to replace lost volume in your cheeks caused by aging, and to redefine your jaw line.
Medical Cosmetic Centre proudly uses the Allergan brand of injectable gels for dermal filling treatments, choosing slightly different types of gels depending on the facial area you are having treated.
The gels are made from a natural complex sugar called hyaluronic acid (HA), which is found naturally in human skin, but decreases with age.
Our patients are always pleased to know that the HA in Allergan injectable gel is not derived from animals. Allergan also uses their own testing technique which ensures the purity of each syringe and avoids the need for animal testing.
Before treatment, you will have a consultation with Dr Kerry. The treatment itself will then take about 15 to 30 minutes.
With optimal treatment, results for lines, folds and scars usually last up to one year, while cheek fillers can last up to two years.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dermal Fillers
Q: What are dermal fillers used for?
Dermal fillers are used to fill in static wrinkles or lines. To understand which lines are best suited to treatment with dermal fillers, it’s useful to know the difference between the two main types of facial lines:
- Dynamic lines are caused when muscles contract to make facial expressions such as smiles and frowns. Anti-wrinkle treatments, which relax the muscles under these lines, are the most suitable treatment.
- Static lines develop because our skin’s natural substances (such as collagen and hyaluronic acid), which provide structure and volume, decrease over time. Many of these static lines can be successfully treated with dermal fillers.
Dermal fillers are especially useful for smoothing static lines around your nose and mouth, such as smile lines, marionette lines and vertical lip lines.
These fillers are also used to enhance lips and cheeks by adding volume and contours that are often lost as part of the aging process.
When dermal fillers are injected, they add volume to these areas of facial tissue, giving your face a smoother, younger appearance.
Q: What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance found in your skin.
As you age, you start to lose HA, which causes the skin to lose structure and volume, contributing to the formation of wrinkles and folds.
Q: What makes Allergan injectable gels different from other dermal fillers?
Allergan’s unique manufacturing process provides a high concentration of cross-linked HA for long-lasting results. It also works to create a smooth consistency gel that flows easily into the skin and provides a smooth, natural look and feel.
Q: What results will I see and how long will they last?
Injectable gel will help to smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. With optimal treatment, most clients’ results will last up to one year.
When dermal fillers are used to enhance cheeks using optimal treatment, results can last up to two years.
After these periods of time, you will need a repeat injection to maintain results.
Some people may also need a touch-up treatment for best results.
If you are having treatment with a dermal filler before a special event, it’s best to plan your treatment for two to three weeks beforehand.
Please ask Dr Kerry what you should expect from your initial treatment and when he recommends rescheduling another appointment.
Q: Is treatment with injectable gel painful?
You may have some mild discomfort during and after the injection.
To make your dermal filler treatment more comfortable, all injectable gels used at Medical Cosmetic Centre contain a local anaesthetic. Dr Kerry will also use a local anaesthetic to numb the area before injecting the gel.
The smooth consistency of the gel allows Dr Kerry to administer it easily using a very fine needle, which also reduces discomfort.
Q: How long does treatment usually take?
The injection process takes about 30 minutes. You will also need to allow time to consult with Dr Kerry prior to treatment.
Q: Can I go straight back to work and my usual activities?
Yes, you can expect to be able to return to work or other normal activities immediately. Any mild redness can be covered with makeup.
Q: What are the possible side effects of dermal fillers?
Dermal filers may cause temporary minor side effects in some people. Dr Kerry will discuss these with you at your first consultation.
