Leg Vein Treatments – Adelaide
Spider veins is the lay term used to describe superficial veins that appear as spider-like clusters anywhere on the legs, from the top of the thighs to the ankles. They are usually red or a reddish-purple colour. Deeper blue veins on the legs are also a common problem. Both types of veins affect women more than men.
Prominent veins on your legs can make you feel self-conscious and you may wear longer clothing to cover them up. While these veins don’t pose any major health problems, they may cause your legs to feel tired and achy.
For most people, a simple treatment called sclerotherapy gradually causes veins to fade until they are no longer visible. The treatment involves using a very fine needle to inject a tiny amount of sterile saline solution into each vein.
Most people will need two or three treatments, about three to four months apart. A touch up treatment every few years is an ideal way to keep any new veins under control. Over 95% of our patients report that the results of sclerotherapy meet or exceed their expectations.
Frequently Asked Questions Leg Vein Treatments
Q: How is sclerotherapy performed?
Sclerotherapy is performed by Medical Cosmetic Centre’s Medical Director and Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr George Kerry.
To perform the procedure, Dr Kerry uses a syringe with the smallest gauge to inject a small amount of sterile saline solution directly into the spider vein. This irritates the vein, causing it to shrink and fade.
Q: Can deeper, blue veins be treated this way?
In many cases, deeper blue veins can be treated with sclerotherapy, providing a less invasive alternative than traditional surgical treatments. Dr Kerry will need to assess your veins to see if sclerotherapy treatment is suitable.
Q: How many leg vein treatments will I need?
Most leg veins need two or three treatments with a space of three to four months between each treatment.
After each treatment, your veins should lighten by 50–60% and will be greatly faded or disappear after your final treatment.
Q: Is sclerotherapy suitable for everyone?
You will need to have a consultation with Dr Kerry to determine if sclerotherapy is a suitable treatment for you.
In over 90% of cases, sclerotherapy is the ideal way to treat superficial spider veins, and in many cases can be used to treat deeper, blue veins.
Q: Are leg vein treatments painful?
Patients who have sclerotherapy report very little discomfort. Treatment of spider veins may cause a slight burning sensation for 30 seconds to two minutes, while treatment of larger blue, lumpy veins may cause a slight aching for three to five minutes.
Q: What happens after my leg vein treatments?
After your treatment, you will need to wear support hosiery for one or two days. Our staff will provide you with information about the ideal support hosiery to use and will provide you with an instruction sheet on caring for your legs over the next few days.
You can return to work and your usual activities immediately after sclerotherapy. Walking for 30 minutes every day is an excellent way to encourage circulation and promote healing.
Q: Are there any side effects from leg vein treatment?
Most patients experience no side effects; however some minor side effects have been reported.
Dr Kerry will discuss any possible side effects and how to manage them with you at your consultation.
Q: What is the cost of treatment and is there any Medicare rebate?
The cost of sclerotherapy treatment is directly related to the amount of time Dr Kerry spends in each treatment session — this will be discussed at your first consultation.
If you have blue veins greater than 2.5mm in diameter, a Medicare rebate may be available. This will also be discussed at your consultation.
Q: What causes spider veins?
No one has determined exactly why some people are affected by spider veins and others are not. However, it does appear to be a problem that runs in families.
Long periods of sitting or standing and trauma to the legs from blows or falls may contribute to the formation of these veins.
Many more women than men develop spider veins, especially during pregnancy, suggesting that hormones play a strong role in their development.
Q: Will my spider veins come back?
Generally, the same veins won’t reappear after your full course of treatments — but you may develop new veins.
Most people find that a ‘touch up’ treatment every few years is an ideal way to keep any new veins under control. You can also work on preventing new veins from forming. Many patients have found that these ideas can help:
- Keep to a healthy weight.
- Enjoy plenty of regular physical activity.
- Don’t sit or stand in one position for too long.
- Wear support pantyhose.
- Give up smoking — smoking restricts your circulation, so if you still smoke, this is another good reason to kick the habit!

Walking into the center was difficult for me. I was ugly and I am sure working in a place like this they would be very beautiful people. I walked in head down. The perkiness of the reception was contagious and at no time was I made to feel comfortable. In fact you could not get a more beautiful, knowledgeable group of people. Thank god I did the homework. Now I have comfort in knowing I will also have not only a good surgeon that has a remarkable staff, but I also know I will be in a clean, professional medical center without the hassle of travelling overseas.*ElaineBlepharoplasty
